What in the world is WEEO WISER
WEEO WISER aims to:
- Develop young women’s self-worth & confidence
- Encourage them to expect healthy relationships & to speak out
against abuse - Provide information & support on legal stuff, & available services
- Challenge different cultural assumptions about relationships and
male & female roles in them
We use a peer education model to support young women in rejecting abusive relationships by building knowledge, skills and attitudes that support non-violence.
. . . and what have we actually done?
We've run 24 WEEO WISER programs
(a total of 120 individual workshops) in
13 local high schools in the Liverpool Local Government Area so far in 2007 with excellent feedback from girls and their schools.
Our 5 session workshop program for (mostly) Year 9 girls in schools, are run by trained peer educators working in pairs. The workshop program complements the NSW PDH & PE syllabus (download pdf) and other violence prevention initiatives.
Our peer educators are 15 local young women from culturally diverse backgrounds who completed a 9 day training. They are supported by 12 experienced local workers, trained WEEO WISER.
The whole program is based on strong partnerships with young women, schools, Dept of Education & Training and local services. This gives the WEEO WISER program the biggest impact, with the potential for it to be run across NSW.

Some of the funniest WEEO WISER moments, came from the camp where as well as the serious business of training to become peer educators we danced, sang, ate, went on a giant swing out over a valley and a high ropes course and we all got to know each other a bit better.
